19th-c. half calf, marbled boards, gilt.-orn. spine, signed R. Hoeppli with 4 raised bands. Good copy with large margins.
An important treatise on intestinal worms, which contributed to the spontaneous generation controversy of the 17th century, with 4 large, folding engr. Antonio Vallisneri (1661-1730), or Vallisnieri was a pupil of Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694) at Bologna and became professor of practical medicine at Padua. In comparison with contemporary scientific thought, Vallisnieri's work has a very modern character. Following empiricists Galileo Galilei and Francis Bacon, he rejected scholastic knowledge and trusted solely in direct observation and in experiments.
