Lot description

Brussels, March 1903

28 cabinet cards, under gilt-edged passe-partouts, each topped with a very nicely drawn and hand-coloured coat of arms finished with gilt and with for almost each photograph the signature of the portrayed in ink underneath.

Kept in an embossed brown leather folio-size album with a central portrait medaillon also embossed in a beige leather, spine with 4 raised bands, silk endpapers, gilt clasps and catches, a.e.g.

Beautifully designed liber amicorum for the Belgian statesman François Auguste, Baron Lambermont (1819-1905) in gratitude for his political career which started in 1842 with passing his diplomatic exam and entering into service of Foreign Affairs and ending in 1902 by celebrating his 60-year's career in the presence of Leopold II. His greatest achievement was the freeing of the Scheldt and thus fixing the toll payable to Holland for which he was made a baron. Afterwards he was often chosen as arbitrator by one or other of great powers of Europe. Liber amicorum with calligraphic dedicatory title in black, red and gilt, topped with the coat of arms of Lambermont. Followed by 28 portrait cabinet cards almost all with the signatures of each portrayed statesman, minister or cleric below the photographs and all crowned with the coat of arms of the nations here represented. Among those portrayed: G. de Belmonte, Archbishop of Edessa, Nikolai de Giers (Russia), A. Gérard (France), E. Mauroch (Romania), Constantine Philips (England), Eduardo Wilde (Argentina), Azevedo de Silva (Portugal), J. do Rega Barre (Brazil), Comte d'Ansembourg (Luxemburg), etc. Furthermore portraits of important personalities of Costa Rica, Iran, the Netherlands, the House of Savoy, the United States of America, Indochina, Sweden & Norway, Germany, Peru, Paraguay, Korea, Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, China, Austria-Hungary, the House of Bavaria, Japan, etc.
