Lot description

[Dordrecht ; Amsterdam, H., J. and P. Keur; P. Rotterdam, 1704]

Engr., 31,2 x 46,2 cm, old hand-coloured, laid paper. Signed in the plate "D. Stoopendael f." and signature mark "6" (minor foxing with a sm. hole above Orléans, foldings a bit worn and split in lower margin, sm. defects but generally a nice copy).

Rare 1st state of D. Stoopendael's bible map, engraved on new copper plates, after Visscher's 2nd world map, the "Orbis terrarum tabula" (1st st.: Elzevier, 1663) and different from D. Stoopendael's sl. larger map published by the Keur family in 1702, or from Bastiaan (not Daniel!) Stoopendael's earlier maps (1st: 1682). Meant for publishing in 17th-c. Dutch bibles, rather than in atlases, this map is smaller and has more foldings than atlas maps. With Dutch text on verso "Korte Beschrijvinge van de Lantschappen des Weerelts [...]". Also present: two diagrams of the Copernican and Ptolemaic solar systems and allegorical representations of the four continents.
Ref. Shirley 498. - Poortman en Augustijn, Kaarten in Bijbels, p. 205, entry K II 1.
