Sm. 4to: [36]-396-[20] pp. (browning, min. marg. soiling, pls & pp. cut short at bottom and esp. at top shaving some pl. numbers; French title, engr. portr. and 3 pls (17, 18, 34) lacking, cut in f. A1, sm. burning traces in ff. Aaa2-Bbb2).
Cont. mottl. calf, gilt spine on 5 raised bands, red leather title label, red edges, marbl. endpapers (joints split and fragile, def. at head, tail and title label). Still good, but incomplete copy.
First edition of this important and detailed work on mushrooms by the Antwerp priest and eminent botanist Van Sterbeeck (1630-1693). Engr. ills: title and 33 (of 36) plates by Peter van Sickeleers, of which 23 folding, showing hundreds of fungi. The text gives detailed botanical descriptions of edible mushrooms (with their preparation), poisonous fungi ("quaede fungi"), ground tubers, herbs, carrots, flowers and fruits, all with their characteristics, use and possible antidote.
