Lot description
26 engravings, of which 23 partially hand-coloured with paint and gold paint, ca. 16,9 x 19,3 cm, laid paper with watermarks (coat of arms, different jugs), many signed "M. de Vos inv.", few signed "I. Sadeler sc.", few signed "Jan L fe" (fol. n. in pen at top right).
Good impressions with wide margins, sheets ca. 24,9 x 23,4 cm. Bound in old Dutch limp vellum, goldstamped (sl. soiled). 2 lower flyleaves of laid paper with watermark (lion in circle).
Nice album with a series of hermit saints after Maarten de Vos (1532-1603). The ensemble includes the title plate and all 25 saints, but is a combination of two different series. The title plate and n. 1-2, 4-6, 8-19, 21-25 are from the copies engraved by Jan van Londerseel (1578-1624) and published by Assuerus van Londerseel (1572-1635). N. 3, 7, 20 are from the orginal series by Johannes I and Raphael I Sadeler.
