Lot description

Antwerp or Paris, Michel van Lochom, ca. 1621-1647

Engravings, ca. 14,2 x 9,3 cm, laid paper with partial watermarks, 2 prints signed at bottom centre: "Mich. van Lochom fecit et excud.", 3 prints with address in lower margin: "Mi. van Lochom excud.", numbered 1-8 in lower margin (fol. n. 29-36 in pen at top right).

Good impressions with wide margins (few pinholes in blank margins). Extremely rare.

Van Lochom was active in Antwerp and Paris, where he also became an engraver and printer to the French king. The title plate (n. 1) depicts Christ in the winepress, accompanied by putti with the instruments of the Passion and two cartouches with Latin texts. The title plate is followed by six scenes from the Passion (n. 2-8, without 5), each accompanied by 4 lines of Latin text in the lower margin. The series is not described in Hollstein and is not present in prominent collections such as Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brussels and London. Probably unique impressions that survived because they were bound in a former album from early on.
Ref. Not in Hollstein.
