Lot description

16 engravings, ca. 14,9 x 8,9 cm, laid paper with partial watermarks, 14 prints signed "Nicol. de Hoey invent." with additonal signatures of engravers, 6 prints with address: "Ph(i)l(ip)s Galle excud.", dated on title plate: "M. D. XCIIII." (partial tear and marginal ms. notes in pencil on title plate).

Good impressions with wide margins. Traces of original binding at left edge. Rare.

Title plate with strapwork cartouches and 15 prophets from the Old Testament (n. 1-4, 7-17). After designs by the Dutch Nicolas de Hoey (ca. 1550-1611), who was mainly active in France. Engraved by Pieter Perret (7 prints), Hans Collaert II (3 prints), Charles de Mallery (2 prints) and an anonymous engraver (4 prints). Each print has a title and a distich by Cornelis Kiliaan in the lower margin. Not in prominent collections such as Amsterdam, Antwerp and London.
