Lot description

[Venice], J. Bapt. & J. Bern. Sessam, 1597

2 parts in 1 vol., 4to: [4]-21-[1]-[10]-11-[1], [8] ff. (some soiling, 1st ff. with light water stains and sl. wavy).

18th-c. blond calf, covers ruled with a triple gilt fillet, gilt orn. spine with raised bands and a label (covers and corners rubbed, spine with worm holes and sl. def.).

Extr. rare vellum copy and first ed. of this "Life" of Gerard Sagredo (977/1000-1046), first bishop of Csanád (Hungary), by the Benedictine monk Arnold de Wion, born in Douai in 1554 and died near Mantua around 1610. Title within an extr. fine Renaissance engr. border, ill. with numerous fine woodcut historiated initials. The 1st part contains the "Vita S. Gerardi Sagredo", the "Annotationes in Vitam S. Gerardi Sagredo", and the "Attestationes complurium auctorum" (each with their own foliation); the 2nd contains the "Officium sancti Gerardi Sagredo" (with its own title), printed in red and black, and text within a border.
