2 vol., large folio (a few tissue guards chipped and worn with various degrees of loss, some lvs loosening, a few with minor marginal tears).
Contemp. quarter leather binding, spine with 5 raised bands (sl. rubbed, corners bumped). Good copy.
Nice example of a late 19th-c. luxury bible in two vol. containing the Old and New Testament. Titles and text ornament by Walter Crane, including initial letters and head-pieces to each Book and Gospel printed in gold. Two leaves of Family Register decorated by Crane, unused except for the first box (cut out). Complete with 100 plates by various English pre-Raphaelite artists and their contemporaries. Autotypes engraved and printed by Lemercier and Co., Paris, each with a decorative tissue guard with a printed caption of the corresponding Bible quote. A highly ambitious project involving i.a. E. Burne-Jones, L. Alma Tadema, F. Dicksee, J.L. Gérome, J. Tissot, P. de Chavannes, J.P. Laurens, I. Repin, E.A. Abbey, M. Liebermann, G. Segantini, D. Morelli and J. Villega.
