Lot description

Brussels, David Teniers II, 1660

Ca. 29 x 20 cm, laid paper (trimmed to platemark, light stains, small parts missing).

Mounted on laid paper. Early impressions.

The "Theatrum Pictorium" of David Teniers II is an illustrated catalogue of the Italian paintings in the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria (1614-1662) in Brussels. Teniers produced many studies after the paintings and had these engraved by several printmakers. An album with the complete illustrated catalogue is in Amsterdam (Rijksmuseum, inv. RP-P-2014-60). 1. Boel, Quirin. Palma il Vecchio, Jacopo (after) - The Raising of Lazarus. Signed in the plate in lower margin at left: "I. Palma Senior p." and right: "Q. Boel s.". The dimensions of the original painting in the lower margin at centre: "8 Alta. 5 Lata.". Based on a painting by Palma Vecchio, possibly in reverse after the painting now in Philadelphia (Philadelphia Museum of Art, inv. Cat. 187). First state before the addition of catalogue number 188 in the lower margin, as can be seen in later editions. - 2. Van Hoy, Nikolaas. Raphael (after) - Christ and the Samaritan Woman. Signed in the plate in lower margin at left: "Raphael P." and right: "v. Hoij d. et s.". The dimensions of the original painting in the lower margin at centre: "4 Alta 3 Lata.". In reverse after a painting thought to be by Raphael, but now attributed to Girolamo da Treviso in Vienna (Kunsthistorisches Museum, inv. Gemäldegalerie, 128). The signature indicates Van Hoy produced the preparatory drawing for this print himself. First state before the addition of catalogue number 3 in the lower margin, as can be seen in later editions.
Ref. Hollstein III.9.1-29. - Hollstein IX.48.5.
