Contemp. quarter roan, similarly painted boards, gilt orn. spines with 5 raised bands (some joints starting to split). Good copy.

Rare first and only edition of this biography of John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), by A. de Vryer (fl. 1736-1747). Engr. ill. (compl.): 4 id. coats of arms on titles, full-page frontispiece portrait of Marlborough by A. van der Laan after A. van der Werf, 2 folding maps ("Nieuwe kaart van de tochten des Hertogen van Marlborough in de Nederlanden" and "Nieuwe kaart van de tochten van de prinsen van Savoije en Mindelheim in Duitschland") and 28 folding plates showing battle views and formations, city sieges, fortifications, bombardments (i.a. Roermond, Ekeren, Blenheim, Neerwinden, Ramellies, Oudenaarde, Oostende, Menen, Ath, Lille, Tournai, Douai, Bethune, Arras, Malplaquet, etc.). During the War of the Spanish Succession, the Duke of Marlborough successfully led the Allied Forces in the Low Countries against Louis XIV, mostly in partnership with Prince Eugene of Savoy. 1 (of 2) printed genealogical table (tear underlaid). Titles in red and black.
