Early edition of Galen's "Opera" edited by the Spanish humanist, physician, pharmacologist, and botanist Andrés Laguna (1499-1559). The Epitome by Galen are the pinnacle of humoral pathology which is based on the idea that our bodies have four important fluids or "humors" balanced (eukrasia) with the external environment. When the balance is disturbed, the result is disease (dyskrasia). It revolutionized the medical art of healing and systematized the complete medical knowledge of its time. The theory was abandoned in the mid 19th c. in favour of the germ theory. Printed in 2 col. Woodcut mark on title and at the end.
