Lot description
2 parts in 1 vol., 4to: [12]-328, 253-[23] pp. (toned, some spotting or minor soiling, tiny tear in pl. p. 116, 2 sm. tears in pl. underlaid).
Contemp. marbled calf (a few sm. restaurations at corners and tail), gilt spine with 5 raised bands. Good copy.
First edition of the vividly narrated voyage of the Haarlem surgeon Schouten (1638-1704), made from 1658 to 1665 in the service of the VOC. Complete with nice engr. frontispiece, full-page engr. author's portrait, 4 engr. ill. in text and 43 full-page (24) or double-page (19) engr. plates by C. Decker or J. Kip after drawings of Schouten, depicting landscapes, towns and harbour views including Ambon, Bantam, Makassar, Arakan, Negapatnam, Colombo, Coylang, Malacca, Batavia and Bergen (Norway), and costumes, warriors, court and battle scenes, religious ceremonies, etc. In Gothic type.
