Lot description

Antwerp, J.-B. Vrients, 1602

2 parts in 1 vol., sm. oblong 8vo: [7 (of 8)]-118-[9] ff. (title missing, 1st f. mounted and strongly browned with left corner torn, corners of 1st ff. reinforced and browned, sl. browning, some light damp stains, occ. soiling, sm. hole in margin of ff. 48, 107 and last f., rare ms. annot.).

19th-c. brown calf signed A. Florentin aîné, covers ruled with a gilt fillet and a gilt dentelle, gilt orn. spine with raised bands and a label, gilt inside dentelle, red edges.

Rare pocket version based on the large atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum". The original edition of this miniaturised atlas contained 72 maps engr. by Th. Galle and was published by Plantin in 1577. After several editions in Latin, French, Italian and Dutch, Galle sold his rights and his copperplates in 1600 or 1601 to J.-B. Vrients. Our edition contains a view of the Escorial, a celestial globe, a terrestrial globe, a world map and 123 nice engr. small maps.
