Antwerp, J.F. de Roveroy, [1737-1767]

12mo: [front.-8]-367-[7] pp.

Contemp. mottled calf, gilt orn. spine with 4 raised bands, red edges (corners sl. rubbed, head def.). Kept in a 19th-c. tooled silver mobile binding.

Rather rare edition on the life of Teresa of Ávila. Illustrated with an engr. front.
Presented here with a silver mobile binding, not necessarily designed for this work but quite fitting. In three attached parts featuring birds of paradise and the Holy Spirit in a floral environment with centered angel's head.
Silver marks: "jsb" stamped on inner closing piece and both the covers together with a lion passant and a leopard's head. Being the Victorian silversmith John Septimus Beresford (fl. 1865-1889). Silver binding dated "Nov. 1891" to a certain "Margaret", with stamped monogram "IHS" on the spine and "Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis" on the back.
