Lot description
Ca. 1740-1780
Drawing, pen and grey ink, grey wash, heightened with white, 20 x 32 cm, laid paper with watermark (Heawood: 145), unsigned.
A lovely depiction of the Nieuwpoort in Haarlem, also known as the "Kennemerpoort", as identified in a ms. note in verso. The gate was built in 1677 and demolished in 1860-1870. With its soft grey tones, the drawing comes close to the sheets made by the Amsterdam draftsman Hendrik de Winter (1717-1790), who was known for his many topographical drawings of Dutch city gates.
