Lot description

Folio: [4]-viii pp.; 100 pl. (ms. note on title, tear in lower margin, a few pl. sl. browned, last pl. cut to the right margin).

Contemp. calf, gilt spine with raised bands (soiled and used).

First edition of the famous extensive work on the castles and manor houses, principal monasteries and abbeys in the province of Brabant. Two identical copies are hard to find. This copy is ill. with the allegorical title after Abraham van Diepenbeeck, the "schema metallorum" for the identification of the coats of arms, 82 full-page, double or folding plates depicting 142 views of monuments or castles, each with the coat of arms of the owners. Only the castle of Reet is missing, but otherwise the usual pl. are present. It also comprises 16 often recurring pl.: Visscher's map of Brabant, panoramic views and plans of Antwerp and 's-Hertogenbosch, W. Hollar's "Antverpien turris ecclesiae cathedralis", views of Carloo, Everberg, Blaesvelt, Leefdael, etc. Plates are engraved by Jacobus Harrewijn, Henri Cause, Gaspar Bouttats and others after Lucas Vosterman, de Cröes, G. de Bruyn, A. Santvoort, R. Whitehand.
