Large folio (titlep. sl. brown., locally faint fox.).
Contemp. half red shagreen, modern paper and cloth corners on covers, gilt orn. spine on 5 raised bands (bands, head & tail rubbed), a.e.g. Good copy.
Impressive work published in 10 instalments (cf. table at the end). 1st impression of the 61 beautiful lithographs on tinted background by François Stroobant : illustrated titlep., 30 large headpieces and 30 plates picturing views, often animated, of sites and monuments of Jerusalem, Bethleem, Jericho, Ascalon, Tiberias, etc.; furthermore, vignette in text representing the arms of Jerusalem. This work is a translation of "The Holy Land [...], with historical descriptions by the Rev. G. Croly". The Scottish painter and traveller D. Roberts (1796-1864) is particularly renowned for his watercoulours representing daily life in the Middle East and especially in Egypt. Ref.
