Lot description

1903 [- 1904]

112 photos, b/w, captioned in French, glued on hardpaper.

Oblong album, 8vo: dark green cloth.

Memories of a French family (the Picots) that moved to Częstochowa (Silesia, Russian Poland) to work at the new factory of sub-processing of wool by the "Entreprises Alfred Motte". This factory was founded c. 1870 in Roubaix (north of France) and expanded at the founder's death to Belgium but more importantly to Poland and Russia. As early as 1889, wool was combed at Częstochowa. Later a real textile complex was created, including spinning, jute weaving and bag making. The factory was built between 1906 and 1912 causing the replacement of many technicians. World War I stopped all activities. The photos show the family fishing in the river Warta, musical meetings, journeys in Russia, photos with friends and neighbours, Polish servants, 1 photo of the monastery of "Jasna Gora" (famous Polish shrine to the Virgin Mary) and 2 of a religious procession, about 22 pictures of the factory (exterior/interior, staff...). With 2 photos of an armed guard protecting the French during "the Russian disturbances" and 1 of a "Jewish specimen" (!). Ref. Y.M. Hilaire (dir.).- Histoire de Roubaix. Westhoek, éd. des beffrois, 1984, unpaginated.
