Rare French edition (orig. English: "Letters and sketches", Philadelphia, 1843; first French 1849) of relations and letters of the Jesuit missionary, explorer and pioneer Pieter-Jan De Smet (Dendermonde 1801-1873 Saint Louis). Ill. with lithogr. front. showing De Smet on a "machine [qui] flottait sur l'eau comme un cygne majestueux". At the end, some "prières en langue tête plate et Pondéras". Three villages in Idaho, Montana and South Dakota are named in honor of De Smet.
