Lot description

[Paris, 1710-1733]

Etching, 15 x 25,2 cm, laid paper, signed in the plate at the lower left "Rembrandt f." (trimmed to platemark, sm. spot at lower right, sm. tear at lower right corner).

Stuck under passe-partout.

Interesting etching after a drawing in the Chatsworth collection by Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627-1678), which was long thought to be by the hand of Rembrandt (hence the signature). A later state of this print was also part of "Impostures innocentes, ou Recueil d'estampes d'après divers peintres [...] par Bernard Picart [...] avec son elogie historique et le catalogue de ses ouvrages", published in Amsterdam in 1734.
Joined: 1. Le Bas, J.-P. After Rembrandt - Christ Preaching (The Hundred Guilder Print). Etching and drypoint, 24 x 28,1 cm, brown laid paper, signed in the plate at lower left margin "Rembrandt f.". Ref. New Hollstein (Rembrandt), 239-copy f. - Bartsch 74. - 2. Worlidge, Thomas. After Rembrandt - Abraham Casting out Hagar and Ismael. Etching, 12,6 x 5,7 cm, thick laid paper, signed in the plate at upper right corner "Rembrandt f. ", numbered "29" (trimmed just inside platemark, plate upper right corner sl. worn). Very good impression. Ref. New Hollstein (Rembrandt), 166-copy g5. - 3. Rembrandt - The first Oriental head. Etching with some drypoint, 15,1 x 12,5 cm, laid paper, signed and dated in the plate "Rembrandt geretuc 1635" (sm. tear at lower right, heavily toned paper). Later but strong impression of the 2nd state (of 3). Ref. Hollstein XVIII:286.2. (4 pcs)
