Lot description

Paris, G. Beys, 1583

8vo: [32]-324-[10, 2 bl.] pp. (somewhat toned and spotted).

18th-c. polished calf, richly gilt spine with raised bands and label, gilt inside dentelles (sm. def. at head and lower corners). Good copy.

Only ed. of an important work of textual criticism of Latin authors, esp. Plautus and Cicero, by the Lübeck humanist Johann Wilhelms (1555-1584). The book was published by Gilles Beys (1540-1595), husband of Plantin’s daughter Magdalena. He was a bookseller and publisher in Paris - not quite successful, as Plantin refused to make him head of the Paris branch of the Officina Plantiniana (see Voet, Golden Compasses, pp.157-161). At the end a long (6 pp.) poem by the Bruges humanist Petrus Colvius (1567-1594).
Ref. Renouard (Impr.) III:349:431. - Pettegree (FB) 91230. - Not in Adams.
Prov. Jean Sirmond (1589-1649), the French Neo-Latin poet, and historiographer of Louis XIII, co-founder and one of the first members of the Académie Française (ms. entries on title).
