Lot description
8vo: [73] ff., pencil drawings (some watercoloured), monogrammed "CDA" (for the majority), dated, occ. captioned in French or in Italian (2 ff. detached).
Contemp. three-quarter green sheep, marbled paper covers, flat spine (rubbed, spine def. with loss of leather).
Preparatory studies of (Oriental) women and men, heads, monuments and architecture (interior design), costumes, statues, riders and horses, portrait of Rembrandt (hand-coloured), group of people, children playing, musicians, a jester, insignia of chivalric orders (hand-coloured), scenes he assisted in Trieste (arrival of a liner, f. 32), views of Miramare, etc. Some with notes (descriptive or for the compositions); interesting note on verso of f. 19 about an neo-classical architectural sketch ("L'archiduc Maximilien désigna cette indication en me parlant de son projet de faire construire un bout de promenade - un temple romain, d'après le fond de mon tableau [...]"). The notebook also contains some historical notes, and descriptions of paintings ("Madonna del Prato" by Raphael, paintings at the "Gallerie Stametz" in Vienna, "Gallerie Ysell", etc.). Cesare Dell'Acqua also illustrated books (some of the sketches are also preparatory for book illustrations?). Some of the sketches were probably drawn when Cesare Dell'Acqua (1821-1905) was in Brussels, the other in Trieste and Miramare.
