3rd French ed., but in fact the 1st of a new series of Galle's innovative pocket-size atlases, i.e., a small-scale ed. (1st ed.: Galle, 1577) of Ortelius' groundbreaking large folio atlas. Galle was not satisfied with the quality of the maps in the previous editions and therefore replaced ca. 18 maps in this edition. It was intended for travelers and students making it a very successful publication from the 1st ed. onwards. Engr. ill.: an allegorical plate, 93 maps incl. a world map, maps of the continents and country and regional maps.
