Lot description
Drawing, pen, brown and black ink, watercolour, grey wash and gouache, on velin paper, 39,5 x 51,5 cm.
Framed (not studied outside frame).
Anonymous trompe l'oeil containing fifteen designs on a single sheet of paper incl. a map of Africa, an 18th-c. frontispiece, psalm and song texts, a lottery ticket, 3 sm. topographical views, a folk saying, etc. The relationship, if any, is left to the imagination of the spectator. Simulating the characteristics of collage in trompe l'oeil is a technique that was practised by 18th-c. artists before it was adapted by modern and contemporary artists.
