Lot description

Drawing, pen and black ink, 22 x 15 cm, laid paper, unsigned (laid down on thick cardboard, some sm. non-obtrusive brown stains, sm. tear just above sitter's head).

A man with a stick on his left knee reclined in an armchair. The figure drawing of the man, resting his gaze on the beholder, thematically fits within Rops' more realist drawings and etchings of working-class people made between 1875 and 1877, such as "L'Oracle du Hameau" (Rouir 586), or "Vieille au chapelet" (Rouir 599). Stylistically, the figure's rendering with thin parallel strokes, the tiny sketches around the figure and the psychological intensity all point towards an attribution to Félicien Rops.
