Contemp. calf, blind ruled covers orn. with flower tools, blind ruled and dated spine with raised bands, ties (head & tail, edges and corners repaired, front cover partly discoloured, scratchings, joints partly split).

Second edition (1st: Milan, 1556) of this work by the mathematician and cosmographer Girava (d. 1556), who moved to Naples in 1556 to advise the Emperor on diplomatic and hydraulic matters. The first part deals with astronomy (the author defends the geocentric and heliocentric system), the second with world geography, and with pp. 186-242 especially devoted to the Americas. Contains also information on navigation. Illustrated with a full-page woodcut depicting an astronomer using a quadrant to observe the moon, 4 woodcuts in-text fig. navigation instruments, 2 sm. schemas in-text and with a circular vignette on last lf. captioned "Post tenebras spero lucem". Title within an orn. woodcut border, some orn. initials. Without the often missing world map after Gaspar Volpell.
