Lot description

Sm. 4to: 95-[1 bl.]-198 (i.e. 168)-[5]-[3 bl.]-232-[12] pp. (sm. clear waterstains on first and last lvs, some sl. foxing throughout).

17th-c. brown gold-tooled morocco, large roll surrounding the boards, semé of fleurs-de-lys and central plate with coat of arms of the "collège des Grassins" (Collegium Grassineum, motto "Lilium inter spinas"), spine with raised bands, compartments decorated with a semé of fleurs-de-lys, a.e.g. (finely restored binding).

Nice copy bound with the coat of arms of the "collège des Grassins" founded in 1569 in Paris, by legacy of Pierre Grassin, sieur d'Ablon, counsellor at the Parliament of Paris, and developed by his brother Thierry. All the books given as prizes at the college bear the founder's arms. The work is an edition of the "Satires" of the Roman poet Persius (AD 34-62), first edition of the paraphrase (pp. 1-95) by the German humanist Nicodemus Frischlin (1547-1590) and reprint of the 1578-edition by Perna containing commentaries by four other philologists, Filippo Valentini (ca. 1512-1572), Antonio Volsco (1484-1508), Philipp Engelbrecht - Engentinus in Latinised form - (ca. 1499-1528), and Antoine Fouquelin (†1561). The first satire blames literary tastes of the time, considered to be decadent. The other ones are philosophical discussions inspired by stoicism.
