Lot description

5 vol., folio, 1 (of 3) maps (n.c., maps of vol. I missing, dampstaining at lower right throughout, stronger in vol. II, sl. browning, some spotting and soiling, marg. sm. worm holes).

Contemp. marbled calf, gilt ornam. spine with raised bands, sprinkled edges (rubbed with some defects).

Monumental edition of St. Jerome's text of the Vulgate by Jean Martianay (1647-1717) and Antoine Pouget (1650-1709). Engr. ill. by Thomassin (d. 1733): 1 frontispiece, printer's device on title, 5 headpieces and 5 initials. Title in red and black. Vol. II contains a map of the Holy Land. Royal privilege granted on 27 November 1690 to the religious of the congregation of Saint Maur, order of Saint Benedict, for a period of 20 years, with a mention of transfer to the printers Louis Roulland and Urbain Coustelier, who associated Jean Anisson. Vol. I & II of our copy bear the name of Urbain Coustelier on title (vol. I with a flyer with Roulland's name).
