Lot description

Paris, P. L'Huillier, 1575

Large folio: [20]-396-[12] ff. (sl. marg. dampstaining on last quires, top of title strengthened, a few minor wormtracks, sl. browning, minor spotting).

Old vellum, flat spine with gilt title label, blue edges (some soiling). Good large paper copy.

Rare first edition of this voluminous explanation of the major controversial issue of Christ's presence in the Eucharist, by the French theologian Claude de Sainctes (1525-1591). With dedications to Pope Gregory XIII and to King Henri III. A fiery Catholic and an ardent supporter of the Catholic League, Sainctes was nominated Bishop of Evreux on account of his vehement attacks on his enemies Calvin and Beza and through the patronage of Charles, Cardinal of Lorraine (1575). He was later condemned to death as guilty of high treason, having approved the murder of Henri III. Large woodcut mark on title.
Ref. Adams S-84. - Pettegree (FB) 85447 = USTC 170265. - STC French (BL) 390.
