Lot description
Venice, 19th c
17,8 x 23,3 cm, unsigned, under passe-partout.
P. Salviati (1818-1894) was an important photographer in Venice in the second half of the 19th c. He specialised in photographing the Venetian architecture and lagoon landscape. He was also well known for his chromatic retouches with aniline dyes, the first synthetically based produced basic dyes. This operation at the time consisted of hand-colouring the colour negatives, in order to mask the defects of the image or to give more vitality to it. Salviati was a real Venice-lover and expressed his feelings in his work. Among the views: the Bridge of Sighs, the Doge's Palace, the Rialto Bridge, St Mark's Basilica, etc.
