8vo: front.-xx-[2 bl.]-245-3 pp.

Contemp. marbled sheep, gilt orn. spine with 4 raised bands, black leather title label, red edges. Very good copy.

Rare first and only edition of the life of Joseph of Cupertino, by Jan De Boeck (Zemst 1697-1775 Brussels), Franciscan at Boetendael. Ill. with engr. front. showing Joseph of Cupertino flying, engr. arms of the brother Counts van Cuypers and a sm. engr. portrait of the Franciscan Dirk of Munster. The Italian monk Giuseppe da Copertino (1603-1663) "was said to have been remarkably unclever, but prone to miraculous levitation and intense ecstatic visions that left him gaping" (Wikipedia). He's the patron saint of astronauts and aviators, people with an intellectual disability and students suffering bad results.
