Lot description

[Ghent, ca. 1827]

Copperplate, 19,5 x 30,2 cm, signed "Goetghebuer" on verso (sl. scratches, some spotting).

Plate published by the Belgian architect and engraver Goetghebuer (1788-1866), in his "Choix des monumens, édifices et maisons les plus remarquables du Royaume des Pays-Bas" (Ghent, Stéven, 1827). The plate, originally line engraved, has been shaded in aquatint and the caption slightly modified ("Pavillon de Harlem" instead of "Pavillon d'Harlem") to produce a small number of prints sold separately or in second-issue copies of the collection (see the copy of Bibliotheek Hasselt Limburg, digitalised in Flandrica.be). Most of the 120 plates of this work were designed and engraved by the author, with the collaboration of other engravers. "Van deze gravures is nog één koperplaat bewaard gebleven, van het paviljoen van het kasteel van Ursel in Hingene, die nu in het prentenkabinet van het Plantin-Moretusmuseum berust" (Inge Misschaert, "Goetghebuer, Pierre-Jacques (1788-1866)", in UGentMemorie, 16-11-2019).
Ref. Vanderhaeghen V:8810.
Prov. "Jacques Gery" (engr. mention, numbered 43, on verso), maybe Jacques-Gery-Joseph Colpin (1772-1836), municipal councillor in Maastricht.
