Lot description

Ca. 1680-1750

Drawing, red chalk, 22,1 x 16,5 cm, laid paper, unsigned (foxing, diagonal crease at lower right, old glue marks).

Most likely drawn after a painting by Antoon Claeissens, "The Banquet of the city council" (1574), now in the Groeningemuseum Bruges (inv.O.23.I). The seated figure with the particular position of the right arm seems to have been inspired by a figure of a city dean on the group portrait. The draftsman slightly altered the position of the legs and updated the garment to late 17th c. fashion. The inscription on the drawing also points to this direction: "Pieter Claeijssens, Deken". Also with colour indications for transfer to canvas.
Joined
: A small collection of various old prints and drawings, often related to Bruges, 17th-19th c. I.a. a Flemish landscape drawing in black chalk; architectural ornaments in red chalk; an etching by Daniël Vrijdag of a raft with a castle in the harbour of Saint-Malo, for an invasion of England in 1797; two printed epitalamia (wedding poems) of the Bruges family Van Huerne / De Schietere de Lopem / de Carnin, etc. (17 pcs)
