Lot description
Venice, 2nd half 16th c
Drawing, black chalk, 30 x 42 cm, blue-grey laid paper with watermark (3 crescent moons, Heawood: 867), unsigned (old glue marks on verso, some sm. creases at upper edge).
Christ seated at the table on the right, blessing the bread, performing the Eucharist, while two Apostles are washing each other's feet. In the left background we are witnessing the previous event where Christ is washing the feet of his pupils. Rendered in a vivid and broad Venetian style, the drawing was copied after a painting by Benedetto Caliari (1538-1598), now in the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice. Caliari was a younger brother to great Venetian painter Paolo Veronese. With ms. note on verso "Benedetto Caliari fratello di P. Veronese".
