Lot description

Various sizes, on vellum, in Dutch and French, and a few in Latin, with pendant seals (some seals missing or in fragments).

The Metteneyes were wealthy and influential noblemen in Bruges, from the 13th to the beginning of the 16th century. They drew their wealth and influence from their trading activities. About twenty members of the Metteneye family were either elected or appointed members of the Bruges city council.
1-2. Two deeds by the aldermen of Sijsele, near Bruges, relating to an annuity and referring to Philippe Metteneye (d. 1470). 1459 (?). 2 ff.-- 3. Pieter II Metteneye (d. 1494) made Lord of Maarke. 26 Aug. 1469. 1 f.-- 4. Deed in the name of Lodowijk van Rokeghem and Barbe Metteneye relating to the inheritance of Philippe Metteneye. 8 Dec. 1480. 1 f.-- 5-6. Two deeds relating to religious foundations made by Pieter II Metteneye in favour of the Augustine convent of Sion in Pamele, near Oudenaarde. 15 March & 15 Dec. 1484. 2 ff. With one of the oldest seals of the convent of Sion in green wax (sl. used).-- 7. Contract between Margaretha Metteneye, wife of Baudouin d'Ongnies, and Jehenne Fourcy. 19 Aug. 1519. 1 f. Margaretha Metteneye is the daughter of Pieter II Metteneye.-- 8-10. Two copies of the same deed in the name of the Bishop Robert de Croÿ relating to Jaspar Metteneye, son of Jan Metteneye, and another one by his vicar general. Brussels & Bruges, 12 & 20 Aug. 1521. 3 ff.-- 11. Will of Jan Metteneye, counsellor and chamberlain to Charles V. Valladolid, 16 July 1521. 1 f.-- 12. Contract relating to Jan and Catharina Metteneye (d. 1545), wife of Jan Adornes, born de la Coste. 24 [?] 1525. 1 f.-- 13. Trial between Jacob Adornes, Hieronymus Adornes, Charles Metteneye, etc. Mechelen, 7 May 1555.
