Lot description

17th c

Drawing, red chalk with grey and brown wash, 43 x 31,5 cm, laid paper with unidentified watermark (standing lion), unsigned (large horizontal folding crease at center, sm. diagonal crease at lower left corner, old repaired tear at lower right corner mostly visible on verso).

Under passe-partout.

In the apostolic mission he led to Cyprus with his disciple Mark, Saint Barnabas became known for healing the sick by the laying on of the Book of the Gospels. The present drawing was made after Veronese's (1528-1588) painting which was commissioned in 1566 by the church of San Giorgio, attached to the Barnabite hospital in the city of Verona. It can now be seen in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen (inv. 803.17).
