Lot description

Basel, Froben Press, 1534

8vo : 527-[1] pp. (toned, marginal dampstaining at bottom of 1st quires).

Cont. blind-stamped calf (rebacked, joints sl. rubbed), covers with heads-in-medallions within a border of flowery ornaments, spine on 3 raised bands, red edges. Very good copy.

Part III, complete in itself, of Erasmus’ “Tomus primus paraphraseon”, being an extensive humanist analysis of the Gospel of Luke. Woodcut mark on title, and a larger one at the end. Printed in italics. Capital spaces with guide-letters. English "heads-in-medallions" panel-stamped binding bearing, on both covers, the Royal Arms and, on the lower cover, the monogram "FG". This is often read as "TG", i.e. the London binder and bookseller Thomas Godfray, active 1530-1537, but Oldham (Blind panels of English binders) remarks “The principal objection would seem to be that the monogram does not look like T.G.” (p. 27, stamps HM 5-6). 19th-c. bookpl.; [Georges Petit]. Ref. Erasmus Online 2989.- VD-16 E-3356.- Adams E-733.- Bezzel 1506b.- Ind. Aurel. 162.705.- Not in De Reuck.
