Lot description

Amsterdam, J.B. Elwe, 1810

3 vol., 12mo: [2]-52-83-76 pp.; 6 pl., [2]-130 pp.; 4 pl., [not paginated]; 32 pl.

Contemp. ill. boards covered with the orig. publ. engraved paper, flat spines (def., repaired with tape).

Lovely little introduction to herbs and flowers, designed to teach women and girls the principles of botany. Illustrated with 3 hand-coloured engr. titles and 42 hand-coloured full page engravings showing herbs and flowers. The plates in the first two vol. show multiple detail figures per plate, in the third volume each of the plates shows one whole plant. First published in four annual volumes in the "Almanach der kruid-kunde". For this edition the almanac elements were abandoned and the botanical texts and plates of the 4 vol. were rearranged in three vol. The work is published anonymously but was prepared by the botanist Johan Carl Krauss (1759-1826).
