Lot description

2 parts in 1 vol., in-12: xlv-[3]-204, [2]-193 pp. (lower margin of 1st title and of last f. of pt. I soiled, some marg. foxing).

Contemp. marbled calf, covers with gilt coat of arms and ruled with a triple gilt fillet, gilt orn. spine with raised bands, red edges.

Second edition, but first with this title (1st ed.: 1753, "Histoire des rois de Rome", in 1 vol.), of the history of Ancient Rome from its foundation up until the Republic. By Palissot de Montenoy (1730-1814), French playwright and disciple of Voltaire. Followed by an essay on the progress of Art.
Prov. Claude-Antoine-Clériadus, Marques of Choiseul-Beaupré (1733-1794), French lieutenant general who was arrested during the Terror and guillotined. He had gathered a significant library and a cabinet of curiosities (supralibros). - [Georges Petit].
