Lot description

Plano, 70 x 53 cm : t.-p., index and 60 handcol. maps (rather clear foxing throughout).

Three-quarter forest-green leather, marbl. brown paper on covers (some scratches on covers, sm. pcs of paper lacking on lower cover, bumped corners), gilt decorated and titled spine (rubbed). Good copy.

This very interesting atlas was published in many compilations over a thirty year period. It was indeed an atlas of "choice" of the publisher and as such consists in a wide variety of maps that Andriveau-Goujon favored to include at the time. It consists in ancient and modern geographical maps, but also cosmographical and celestial maps, maps showing the movements of sun and moon, tables showing heights of mountains and lengths of rivers, and at last a plate showing the flags of the most important powers at the time, all engraved and hand colored. The estimated date is based on the newest map sheet in the atlas, 1851. The map of Australia is dated 1826, whereas the map of Spain and Portugal (printed in 2 parts) is dated 1847, some maps are dated 1829, 1836, etc. and the larger part of the maps is dated 1850 or 1851. Ref. Cp. BnF.
