Lot description

London, Smith and son, after 1870

Diameter: 40 cm; with 16 chromolithographed gores and 1(of 2) brass polar calottes (sm. damages, browned varnish, no restaurations).

Mounted in a wooden stand with a graduated brass meridian ring, an engr. paper horizon ring, and total height: 65 cm.

English table top globe from the publishing house Charles Smith & Son. Originally founded by the father Charles in 1799, the range of published globes was extended after Charles' son entered the business in 1845. The firm moved from The Strand to Charing Cross in 1870. Giving that this last address is on the globe, it was produced after 1870.
Ref. Dekker, pp. 56, 496.
