Lot description

8vo: [36]-511-54-[2] pp. (title sl. soiled, pl. browned).

Contemp. brown calf, gilt orn. spine with 6 raised bands, marbled endpapers, red edges. Good copy.

First edition published in England (first Amsterdam, 1650) and the best known work by the German geographer Varenius (1622-1650) establishing a framework for physical geography capable of including new facts of discovery as they arose. Engr. vign. on title, 8 fold. eng. pl. and 1 fold. engr. map. The work describes figures and dimensions of the earth, the influences of the sun, moon, climate and seasons of universal geography and practical applications of geography in mapmaking and navigation including longitude and latitude determination.
