Lot description

S.l., s.n., [end of 18th]

Folio: [71] ff., on paper, in French (sl. browning, a few soiling).

Loose, seven quires, in a contemp. vellum cover with one side overlap. (sl. soiled).

Unrecorded (autograph?) manuscript copy of Baert's "Mémoires sur les sculpteurs et architectes des Pays-Bas" (1748) posthumously edited by François de Reiffenberg in "Compte-rendu des séances de la Commission royale d'histoire" (see ref.). This text contains short biographies of "Belgian" artists from the 15th to the 18th century. This is an interesting account of the state of knowledge of art history in Belgium at the end of the Ancien Régime. Reiffenberg based his edition on the two copies held in the Royal Library of Belgium, from the Van Hulthem collection, one of which was bought from the author's parents. Ours contains some variants and has i.a. a longer introduction, some footnotes and bibliographical references. Enriched with a quire containing some biographical information relating to artists described by Baert and written with an another hand: [10] ff. The same hand of the previous document specifies, on f. 1, "Ce manuscrit par S[ieur] [Dumont?] reçu le 6 mars 1775".
Ref. "Compte-rendu des séances de la Commission royale d'histoire", 14 (1848), pp. 39-101. - Biogr. nat. I:633.
