17th c

Drawing, pen and black ink, with grey wash, 19,5 x 38,2 cm, thick laid paper, unsigned (underlaid, pasted by corners on mod. cardb., some tears, esp. in right part, upper right corner torn, reinforced paper at left).

Figure drawings of chained and imprisoned men, based on an engraving that is now accepted to be by Giovanni Battista Scultori, having previously been attributed to Giorgio Ghisi. The engraving itself is after a fresco design by Giulio Romano for the Sala dei Venti in the Palazzo Te in Mantua. A preparatory drawing for the fresco still survives in the Royal Collection (Inv. No. 0483).
