Lot description

1898

More than 400 loose sheets (somewhat browned, some with folds).

Herbarium of the Belgian landscape architect Jules Janlet (1880-1973). More than 400 species gathered in the year 1898 at several places in Belgium such as: Gembloux, Marche-les-Dames, Watermael-Boitsfort, Auderghem, Yvoir, Houx, Lonzée etc. All carefully organised according to their botanical family. Each plant species comes with a label mentioning family, Latin and French names, location and date of harvest. Some species come with another label giving more information on the plant itself, on the characteristics, the environment where it grows, etc.
Janlet created numerous private gardens but also some open to the public such as those of the Brussels International Exhibitions of 1935 and 1958. His most famous work remains the floral decor and plantations of the charming Square Armand Steurs at Sint-Joost-ten-Node which he created together with architect Eugène Dhuicque in 1932. His topiary work remains less known and is still there to be discovered.
