Lot description

Turn of the 18th-19th c

Drawing, graphite pencil with grey colour wash, 35 x 48 cm, unsigned.

Passe-partout with ms. mention "B. Barbiers 1784-1816". Glass and wooden gilt frame (not studied outside frame).

Pastoral scene in the ruins of an old construction with arches used as storage place (?), a man pushing a barrel placed in a wheelbarrow, pigs in a small covered pigsty, a woman descending into a cellar. The Catholic Dutch painter and draughtsman Barbiers (Amst. 1783-1816) had been his father's pupil and specialised in views of towns and landscapes.
