Lot description

Ca. 1700

Drawing, red chalk, pen and black ink with grey wash, 28 x 31,5 cm, laid paper, unsigned (old diagonal creases at upper and lower right corners, mostly visible on verso, repaired tear at centre of upper edge).

Under passe-partout.

Coronation of a royal figure by a bishop, surrounded by clergy and court officials. The scene was identified on the passe-partout as the coronation of Philip V of Spain, after the Spanish Wars of Succession. The drawing has only been partly finished with only the main characters worked in pen. Most likely a workshop drawing in preparation of a larger painting, where the workshop assistants were to fill in the remaining figures and the architectural setting.
Prov. Albert Van Loock (coll. stamp on verso, Lugt 3752)
