8vo: [16]-412 pp. (emblem 59 printed upside down; sm. tear reaching text at ff. V4, Bb3 & Mm3, blank bottom corner of f. Mm2 repaired, ff. Ll2-3 clumsily repaired with brown paper tape, tiny wormtrack in title becoming single wormhole in 1st half of vol.).
19th-c. red three quarter shagreen (joints, corners and bands sl. rubbed), gilt-ruled covers with marbled paper, gilt spine with 5 raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers.
Rare edition (1st Paris 1646) of this emblem book by de Gomberville (1600-1674), closely modelled on O. Vaenius' "Q. Horatii Flacci emblemata" (1607). Ill. with 103 full-page engr. emblems (60 + 43). Woodcut head- and tailpieces. Woodcut mark on title.
