Lot description

Ca. 1652-1665

Drawing, pen and brown ink, framing lines in brown ink, 15,7 x 21,8 cm (borderlines), 20,5 x 27 cm (sheet), vellum, signed with brown ink in lower left margin "Invent. A. Creuses. Rom. F." (ink sl. faded, some sm. stains mostly at margins, sm. repaired hole at lower right edge and near the goat to the right).

Nice animated drawing, picturing a goat shepherd playing bagpipes in a river landscape with mills and farm houses. Anthonie Crussens (ca. 1635-1665) was active in Brussels and specialised in village and landscape scenes in the style of Bruegel. His two sons, Guilielmus and Gaspar, continued his father's workshop, working in a very similar manner. Other drawings by Anthonie Crussens' hand, almost all on vellum, are now in the Collections of the Bruges Printroom, the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin and the Brussels Royal Library.
